Are you eligible to file a claim on the Deepwater Horizon Fund? Greg Price discusses the settlement process with Charles Philpott, CPA and certified fraud examiner for PKF.
Greg: This is PKF Texas, The Entrepreneur’s Playbook. I’m Greg Price, director of consulting solutions, and I’m here with Charles Philpott, a CPA and one of our certified fraud examiners at PKF Texas. Charles, welcome to the Playbook.
Charles: Thank you, Greg.
Greg: So Charles, I understand in a litigation support role, you’ve recently been working with the Deepwater Horizon Settlement Process. Charles. Are there companies that could be eligible but don’t know that they could be eligible for settlements?
Charles: Well, certainly, and we have a recent example. A company called us and told us they didn’t think they had a settlement but were just curious, and see if we could help them figure it out. It turns out not only do they have a settlement, but a significant one. Key to a company’s consideration there is are they within the economic zones that are defined in the settlement, which are basically the southern states bordering the Gulf of Mexico, but we can help identify specifically how they apply within the settlement.
Greg: Charles, that’s a great testimonial to that process. Now are there any key dates that one would need to be aware of as they go through this process?
Charles: Oh, definitely. For a company or individual that wishes to independently pursue a claim outside the settlement, November 1st is the deadline to opt out. Subsequent to that, if you – an individual wishes to file a claim, April 22nd, 2014 is currently the date slated for the last date to file a claim.
Greg: That sounds like some people have some homework that you need to get after it then.
Greg: Okay, we’ll have you back to talk some more about some other things on the Playbook. All right?
Charles: Thank you.
